Their Eyes Were Watching God, Chapter 7

"The years took all the fight out of Janie's face. For a while she thought it was gone from her soul."(Hurtson, 1937)

This quote says that througout the years spent trying to alter her life to fit jody's, Janie loses energy and hope of a good relationship because of all the mistreatment she recieved from Jody. He never really bothered to get to know her personally. She was more of a trophy wife to him than someone who he cared alot about and who he loved.

"For what can excuse a man in the eyes of other men for lack of strength?"(Hurston, 1937)

When Janie insulted Jody in front of all the customers in his store, he lost alot of his pride and vanity. His entire image was made a mockery of. He was copmpletely embarassed and humiliated in the most degrading way. She made a joke of one of the most important assets of his masculinity. The people in the town didn't look at Joe the same way after that.
