This quote is saying basically that sometimes you won't fully understand why some of the things that went on in your life occured until later on in your life. Maybe when you were a child you didn't understand alot of things, but when you get older and become an adult, you will start to learn more.

Janie said this because everyday is a new day and all your mistakes are left behind once the day is over and a new day begins. You will then have the chance to live better than you did the day before. Janie understood this because she thinks about alot of things.
