People started to get ideas about janie ever since she attended a town picnic in a color other than all white which was what she wore when she was "mourning". people started to start their rumors up again and this time they were about her and Tea Cake. People started becoming angry and feeling as if janie was moving on too quickly. Janie couldn't pretend to be sad anymore because everyday she still felt tied down to joe Starks.

Janie didn't have a normal childhood. She was brought up by her grandmother to live as if she was a white girl. She went to a white school and live in a white, wealthy household and even thought she was white herself but it was only because her grandmother wanted her in that type of environment. Janie realized that that wasn't the life She wanted.
